Been a while since I posted.

I have spent several hours this week researching some information that Roddy Conrad posted on a while back.  That is the subject of Algaefix.

I called the technical services department number listed on the container to see if they had any additional information on the product’s LC50 or LD50 when it comes to carp.

I explained to him that I had several pond owners that had turned to me after trying other methods of control for string algae that did not work well.  I also reported the results Roddy had reported.  His response to me was very curt in that they do not recommend Algaefix for any type of game fish.  I asked why they don’t include that on the bottle, and he refused to answer.  When he was asked about the LD50 for carp species, he repeatedly stated that that was proprietary information that he could not release.

Think about that response.  Sorry, I can’t tell you the answer to that simple question because it is proprietary in nature.  We do have the information, but we can’t tell you.

So what are they trying to hide?

They are willing to discuss at length the reasons why you screwed up in dosing your pond with Algaefix, including over dosages, not enough aeration etc.  But a simple answer to what the LC/LD50 of their product…..they refuse to answer.

I would suggest boycotting the product until such a time as they are forthcoming in their information.

Hello Daniel . . .

Couldn't agree with you more about there being a reason they won't tell you what the LC50 of their product is.

And that reason does not favor the innocent hobbyist trying to clear algae from their pond.

Caveat Emptor, big time!

Don, I have had too many ponders in my area kill off all their fish.  That is actually the first question I ask in a total pond killl off is if they have used an algae killer in the pond.

I have used it under careful controled applications, and have never had an issue right off the bat.

But wonder what the long term effects are..........

Daniel,
Good information for new and old readers of the board. I already speak out against the use of this product every opportunity I get. Another reminder of a product I was informed about in the spring. D-Solve 9 is the name, and it contains twice as much of the active ingredient in Algae Fix, making it twice as dangerous as AF. The solution is at 4.5 in AF and at 9 in D-Solve 9...hence the name. I have not seen this product for sale as of yet, but for those of you who do, avoid it as well.

Good to see you posting again.

You know, I'm going to speak my mind here on this.

they do not recommend Algae fix for any type of game fish

I'd like to know just what kind of fish they feel are safe then with this product in a pond?   Roll Eyes  This has to be one of the most ridiculous things I have heard of.. if it isn't safe for game fish, then it isn't safe for any MO...

It sounds very much to me that they know this and still market it as "safe" for fish and want to put the blame on everyone but themselves.. there's no self accountability MO!   A lot of these type of products are marketed and marked "unsafe for fish" and specify they are for water features as I have looked at those products labels.

I will also note here that I have noticed some stores have dropped carrying this product in my area.. they do have a different one and it appears to be milder in solution. But I only use it for my AQ plants which I put in a bucket and put a lid on, let them sit 24 hours and then rinse when it is called for which isn't often.

I wouldn't recommend it even in a AQ as we have seen death by AK even when its been done correctly..   Sad  So if folks use in AQ, then do the bucket method.
